In the struggle to define STEM Education and the critical components of student learning, industry has, for some time, shared with us their concerns over deficiencies they have observed in students’ knowledge and skill sets. Often educators focus primarily on course content, rather than engaging in discussions of how specific soft skills, 21st Century Skills, people skills, etc. are critical to success beyond the classroom. When discussions do happen about 21st Century Skills, they may never get to the practical integration of collaboration, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and communication with content. This session seeks to help educators use an industry-generated philosophy in their lesson development to focus instruction on integrating both content and 21st Century Skills. This integration philosophy marks the primary difference between project focused and problem-focused teaching.
